James Norman's Story

I was born in the Bronx, NY, in December 1959 to Austrian parents, so only spoke German until I learned proper English when I went to elementary school. It is a common mistake to assume I'm Jewish because of the name, but I'm not even close. I consider my hometown to be Teaneck, New Jersey since I was raised there and lived there on and off until I was 30. I attended Rippowam under my birth name of Norman Spielberg in Stamford, CT, as part of the class of 1977 and 1978. I received a BS in Computer Science from Fairleigh Dickinson University, it was a decent school and conveniently within walking distance of my mother's house in Teaneck, NJ. I now live in Columbia, South Carolina, partially to get away from the cold northeast weather but mainly because I was offered a job here in 2003. I have three grown up kids in Atlanta, GA, and am happily divorced. I had a deadly serious heart attack on November 2, 2014 and had a triple bypass operation. Like my brother who never quite recovered completely from his, I'm at about 85% of what I was. But being alive is better than not. The two classmates I recall best are Liz Sosis from German and would love to hear from her, she was an awesome school friend !! and we hung out smoking together sometimes and chatted about Led Zeppelin and the Beatles. She remains to this day one of my all time favorite people!! And Tracie Holmes, who is remembered well by everyone, I'm sure. She was such an awesome person who completely intimidated me. I hope she is well and very happy, she deserves no less! Music I like includes The Faith Tones (that's a joke, their album cover is often mentioned as the worst album cover EVER and it would be really cool to own one - ha!), ALL of the Beatles together and as solo artists, and I saw Paul McCartney in concert three time over the years, Pink Floyd, still have a BIG thing for Joan Jett and the Runaways, as well as the Who, Alanis, Sheryl Crow BEFORE she became country, the Who, the Stones, Steve Miller, Kiss, ELO, Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, even the Monkees (!), and Cheap Trick. I also particularly adore Debbie Harry and Blondie, When I lived in Manhattan in the late 1980s for three years to be near work, I once passed Debbie Harry on Broadway near 4th Street in NYC one beautiful fall afternoon, she looked EXACTTLY like her pictures. She looked at me and I could tell from her eyes that she saw I recognized her, I looked at her and saw that she noticed me, and then I left her alone out of respect for her privacy. Movies I like include Dark Shadows, Star Wars, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, ANYTHING by Woody Allen, and the Alien films. TV shows I like include Person of Interest, The Big Bang Theory, Xena: Warrior Princess, the Prisoner, the various Star Treks, but Voyager was my favorite as I adore Kate Mulgrew. Her biography is riveting reading. I am asked everyday if I'm related to famous director Steven and there may be an ancient connection, since both our families are from the same part of Europe. People have actually referred to me as "E.T.", which I find highly offensive, or call me Steve by mistake, or send me work emails addressed to Steven because they're too lazy to remember my name. I dislike "Norman" so much, I had my name changed legally in the Manhattan Civil Court on December 16, 1988, and have gone by the name James ever since. ...Expand for more
I like the name James and identify with it more than "Norman", eeech. There was King James the first of England, who was also King James the 6th of Scotland (go figure!), who is also the King James whose translation of the bible into English is the most widely known. There was a famous writer named James Thurber, and then there was James T. Kirk from Star Trek. It had also often been the most popular boy's name for many years. My favorite quote is "Questions are a burden to others, answers a prison for oneself." from a sign in the 1968 cult, spy and heavily metaphorical television show The Prisoner, which starred and was written by Patrick McGoohan. My hobbies used to be writing and you can read my best story here: beatlesrock.com/jlig.html, and music, at which I was pretty awful but VERY enthusiastic about and enjoyed tremendously. Remember that I never claimed I could sing, but I just did the best I could. I thought my guitar playing got pretty good near the end of that period considering I taught myself from scratch. And I was downloaded by THOUSANDS, if not tens of thousands, from a 1990s Internet site that used to be a free for artists which "classmates" won''t let me name, mostly under the "band" name Random Karma, and did some pretty rude songs because the more attention you got, the higher you rose on their charts, Being crude and using humor was part of my marketing strategy, and it worked. Had multiple number ones in the genres Classic Rock and Alternative/Twee, even if I STILL don't quite know what "Twee" REALLY means, I think it means "fey". Do a search on my name and you WILL find that I posted all kinds of silly and serious music on the web, and I am on that VERYwell known social networking site, you KNOW the one, under the name James N Spielberg. Please send me a friend request if you like. My hobbies now are collecting signed first edition books, authentic autographs from musicians, movie and tv stars, mainly just women I admire. Kristen Stewart, Jennifer Lawrence, Bridgette Bardot, all of the cast of Game of Thrones, and many many more. I also collect figures of beautiful anime characters from Japan, they are great fun and sexy, and appreciate wildly in value when they're sold out. My best friend from Rippowam, whom I was frequently in touch with in the 90s, was the scruffy, macho sort of dude, John Rodriguez from German class. I think but am noit sure that he has passed from cancer, and left behind a beautiful and charming wife, and a baby girl I only knew as a baby. Our two unofficial reunions in the 1990s in Beaverton, Oregon, were complete disasters as we just did not get along well anymore. We were close as family, but like some relatives, fought like cats and dogs. My yearbooks where tossed in the trash by my ex-wife during our nasty divorce in 2001, and I just yesterday, July 13, 2015, ordered a reprint of the 1977 one. There were two Nancys, one in the class of 1977 who I wish I had known better but who moved, and another in 1978, not very tall but with the most beautiful eyes of anyone in the entire school, whom I dearly wish I had known better but I was SO shy in those days, I usually kept to myself. I am in touch with Steve Simmons from German class, and he's doing very well. Nice kid in school, who turned into a nicer and successful man. I'd like to hear from anyone who remembers me.
